Privateers Cheerleading

Privateers Cheerleading

GENERAL INFORMATION:
The Privateers cheerleading team is comprised of students that share a common goal of supporting the University's Division I NCAA intercollegiate athletics program and promoting school spirit on and off campus.

Being a member of the team requires a full-year commitment from tryout to tryout. The team attends UCA college spirit camp in July every year at Texas State University. The team practices twice a week in the afternoon at Lakefront Arena and performs at Privateers volleyball, men and women's basketball games. Additionally, the squad performs at school events, pep rallies, alumni and community events.

How can I prepare for UNO Cheerleading Tryouts?

We are looking for a well-rounded individual. First and foremost an outgoing personality as well as a good character is very important. The UNO cheerleaders are highly visible within our community and therefore must be able to represent the University in a positive way. Grades and how well you work with our coaches will be considered. Good collegiate style motions, tumbling and stunting are also very important. Commitment to a full year of participation is mandatory as we start in April with tryouts, we meet a few times over the summer to prepare for camp, we start formal practices in August and games begin in September. We cheer for volleyball, men's and women's basketball, as well as we do a lot of campus and community service.

Stunting: If you do not have any stunting experience it is imperative to get experience prior to tryouts as this a necessity to making the team. Local cheer gyms and college squads are good resources for private coaching lessons. Our squad members typically have basic stunts such as extensions, liberties; walk-in stunts as well as tosses stunts. Being able to stunt with several people and not just one person is a must. When we are choosing our team, we consider who is easy to work with and can be used with different partners. We are also considering if the person is coachable and can easily make corrections as well as get along with other participants.

If you do not cheer on a high school squad and you are on a competitive team only, please consider getting a private coach to assist you with "game day" cheerleading. Being talented is important but you must also know how to "lead a crowd" and cheer in front of fans, not just judges. Yelling loud with natural collegiate cheering expressions, sharp motions and good motion placement is all very important.
