Baton Rouge- For the third consecutive week,
Michael Strong bettered his personal mark in the indoor long jump. However, this week the improvement produced a new school record of 23' 11.75" at the Bayou Bengal Invitational at LSU's Carl Maddox Field House.
Once again, the sophomore had a flair for the dramatic, nailing his school-record effort on his sixth and final attempt giving him a fifth-place finish in a strong field. Last week, Strong won the event at the KMS Invitational in Birmingham on his final jump.
The product of Lusher High School in New Orleans broke a record set in 1995 by Tim Kinnard, 23' 7.50'
"His first jump wasn't really a good one but he went over 7 meters, so I knew he was in for a good day," said interim track and field coach
Adam Carlisle. "It was a huge day for Michael and he's a very deserving person. It puts him at a good place for conference."
Other highlights saw distance runner
Aaron Albert, of Baton Rouge, with a third-place finish in the men's 3,000-meter run. Albert battled the Southeastern Louisiana duo of Adam Cortez and Anthony Cordero who finished first and second respectively. Albert crossed the finish line in 8:47.46, a mere 1.3 seconds behind the winner.
Personal records were set by freshman
Trenton Anderson in the men's 600-meters (1:24.70) and
Jacob White of Volcano, California in the weight throw with a toss of 41'-08".
Farydah Inoussa, the defending pentathlon champion in the Southland Conference continue preparation for defense of her crown with a season's-best in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8:84, while
Nicole Broussard's 16'-05.25" effort in the long jump was a collegiate best for the sophomore from Prairieville, Louisiana.
"Overall it was a really good meet. We are starting to make some little jumps and that's always a good sign. I was really happy with today...better than the previous week," said Carlisle.
The Privateers will make their second trip of the indoor season to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the Tyson Invitational next week, February 9-10.
The Southland Conference Indoor Championships are set for February 21-22 in Birmingham, Alabama at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
