Track And Field Teams Record Solid Performances At McNeese Spring Time Meet

Nicholas Mitchell sets two school records in the discus and hammer

Lake Charles, Louisiana-Two school records and a number of personal records were the highlights for the University of New Orleans track and field teams at the McNeese Spring Time Meet in Lake Charles, Louisiana last weekend.
 
Freshman Nicholas Mitchell was the Privateers performer of the meet shattering school and personal marks in the discus (154' 2.25") and the hammer throw (154' 7.75").
 
Personal bests were recorded by Michael Strong and Alex Hawkins in the 100 meters.  Strong sprinted to a 10.84 clocking while Hawkins covered the century distance in 11.18.  Michael Nicholls continues to improve his time at 200 meters.  The Southland Conference hurdles champion shows he's getting accustomed to the event with a personal record of 21.23.
 
 "That's big because it puts him on track to score at the conference meet a probably make regionals in the 200," said head track and field coach Benjamin Dalton.
 
Nicholls, a sophomore, also turned in a time of 13.97 in the 110-meter high hurdles.
 
Emily Martinez, a senior from Canyon, Texas, was the top finisher among the Privateers in the Women's 1500 meters.   Martinez ran a personal best 5:09.99.
 
"This was a nice one for us with a good level of morale and everyone did really well," said Dalton.  "Now we can build to next week and then to LSU so that will be really good."
 
Next week the Privateers will be in action Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Apr.13-15, in Mobile, Alabama at the South Alabama Invitational.
