Women's Basketball Opens Southland Play At Abilene Christian

Privateers ride three-game win streak into the Lone Star State

New Orleans- The streaking University of New Orleans women's basketball team will hit the road Thursday attempting to run their win streak to four when they face Abilene Christian in the Southland Conference opener for both clubs.  Tipoff is 7 p. m.

New Orleans (4-7) got 25 and 19 points respectively from Randi Brown and Shania Woods in downing Texas Southern in their last outing, 72-69.

"We are focusing more on the defensive end and allowing that to create the offense," said head coach Keeshawn Davenport.  "We are having more involvement around Randi with more inside scoring lately.  But it all happens because we are getting defensive stops."

Randi Brown continues to pace the Southland Conference in scoring at 22.0 ppg.  The Houma, Louisiana senior, who also leads the team in steals with 2.5 a contest, was named Southland Conference Player of the Week by College Sports Madness for the second straight week after her performance against Texas Southern.

Junior Shania Woods leads the Privateers in rebounding (7.5) and she averages 10.6 points a game.   The Houston, Texas native recorded her third double-double of the season against TSU with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Point guard Mariah Wright leads UNO in assists with 2.8 a game.

Abilene Christian (6-4) won back-to-back regular season Southland Conference titles in 2016 and 2017 and went to the WNIT.  When the Wildcats defeated Old Dominion on December 22, it was the 400th career win for head coach Julie Goodenough.

Dominique Golightly leads the Wildcats in scoring at 13.4 points a game.  Abilene Christian leads the conference in team rebounding (42.8) and rebounding margin (+9.5).

"This is a great test for us right out of the gate.  It's the second season and we are 0-0 right now."  Davenport continued, "Our three-game winning streak does not amount to a hill of beans now.  Everybody's on the same playing field."

Last season ACU defeated UNO in Abilene 68-55.

After facing the Wildcats of Abilene Christian, New Orleans will return to action Saturday, December 30, at Lakefront Arena when Houston Baptist comes to town for a 2 p. m. encounter.
