Privateer Volleyball Adds Trio to 2013 Roster

Division I Transfer Podwell Joins JUCO Transfer, Mandeville Product as Latest Additions

2013 UNO Volleyball Roster

NEW ORLEANS – With preseason practice scheduled to begin in roughly two months, New Orleans head volleyball coach Kim Young-Buford announced the addition of three new players.

The group announced by Young-Buford includes Chicago State transfer Alyssa Podwell, Laredo (Texas) Community College transfer Ashley Everett and Mandeville High product Courtney Roblez.

Podwell fills a team need by providing an experienced middle blocker after playing 32 matches for Division I Chicago State in 2012. The Great West Conference 'Newcomer of the Year', the 6-0 Podwell totaled a team-high 210 kills and ranked second on the team with two kills per set.

Podwell averaged 0.50 blocks per set for the Cougars a year ago after prepping at Providence Catholic in Homer Glenn, Ill. While a prep standout, Podwell was named Southtown Star All-Area and All-South Suburban Catholic League as a senior while leading the Chicago area with 95 blocks.

“Alyssa has gained valuable collegiate experience after earning tons of playing time as a freshman at Chicago State,” said Young-Buford. “Her quick movements as a middle blocker made her ideal for our program and we are happy to announce Alyssa as a new member of our Privateer family.”

A 5-10 outside hitter/middle blocker, Everett is transferring to the Lakefront after playing the last two seasons at LCC. During her freshman campaign, Everett averaged 0.58 blocks a set for the Palominos.

While playing for United High School in Laredo, Everett was named 'Middle Blocker of the Year' her final two seasons, while also earning all-district honors as a senior.

“Ashley brings with her a great mental game to our program,” said Young-Buford. “She is a player that chooses her shots wisely. “

“Ashley understands that we have a huge job ahead of us in and out of conference. She is a hard worker and I am ready to see her on the court this season. “

Roblez rounds out the trio after playing four years at Mandeville. A 5-9 middle blocker and outside hitter, Roblez served as a varsity co-captain on teams that went deep into the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) playoffs.

An accomplished player on the sand, Roblez qualified and participated in the Beach Volleyball Junior Olympics and was a two-year USA Volleyball Beach Bayou Region quad champion.

“Courtney is a hard worker and is a great, well-rounded person and athlete,” said Young-Buford. “We are happy to grab this athlete from the Northshore and could not be any happier that she will be joining our program.”

The UNO volleyball team is scheduled to report to campus during the weekend of Aug. 10 before beginning practice on Aug. 12. A full 2013 schedule will be released shortly with the first of 12 home matches slated for Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. against crosstown foe Tulane.
