BATON ROUGE, La. – Second-ranked LSU capitalized on a five-run first inning during an 11-2 win over New Orleans on Tuesday night at Alex Box Stadium.
A Sean Mcmullen triple led off the opening inning for LSU (46-7), which scored their five runs on six hits in the frame. The remaining five hits for the Tigers came in the form of singles as the hosts also took advantage of a UNO (7-41) fielding error to gain their 5-0 advantage by the end of the inning.
Privateer starter
Alex Smith (3-9) saw his day end after retiring just one opposing batter. Smith was charged with allowing four earned runs in the frame before being replaced by
Stone Speer.
Speer held LSU scoreless for four innings before allowing four runs on five hits in the fifth inning as the hosts extended their lead to 9-0. A Mcmullen double to right-center plated two of the runs for the Tigers and completed a 2-for-3 performance for the designated hitter.
“They see that velocity on a regular basis and Stone's change-up was keeping them off balance,” said UNO head coach Bruce Peddie. “He had a great breaking ball earlier and Stone has an advantage having played with a few of those guys.”
“Stone did a good job and the second time through the lineup, they were finally able to get to him.”
Six different hitters had a pair of hits for LSU, which added a single run in trips to the plate in the sixth and seventh. UNO relief pitcher
Garrett Manning held the hosts off the scoreboard in the eighth.
The early run production made a winner of Tigers' starter Hunter Newman (2-0), who threw a career-high five innings. A
Zach Liberto leadoff single in the fourth and a walk issued to
Cameron Keener were the only marks against Newman, who carried a perfect game through three innings.
Both Privateer runs came in the seventh inning.
Andre Damiens and
Zacary Hawkins reached base on consecutive walks issued by LSU relief pitcher Brent Bonvillian. Keener and
Zach Pohto both singled later in the frame allowing Damiens and Hawkins to come across the plate.
“LSU has a great ballclub and a great offense,” said Peddie. “When you can run guys with arms like that out there, that is an outstanding team.”
“These kids, I chatted with them and told them we have had a challenging schedule, a challenging year. We have three more to finish up with and we'll continue to plug through this before we get to our brighter days ahead.”
UNO will return to action on Thursday at 5 p.m. against Campbell. The three-game series against the Big South North Division champions will include games on Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 12 p.m.
