NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team released its 2013-14 schedule on Wednesday afternoon, and the Privateers will play two of the first four games of the campaign in the Lakefront Arena.
"It is an exciting time to be a part of the Privateer program, especially now that we have a home in the Southland Conference," said
Keeshawn Davenport, head women's basketball coach. "We have a good mix of returners and newcomers and my staff and I are looking forward to what our season has in store for us."
The Privateers will open the season at crosstown foe Tulane on Friday, November 8 in the Devlin Fieldhouse, before making their home debut against Grambling State on November 14. Game time against Grambling is set for 7 p.m.
New Orleans then will make the trek to SEC for Mississippi State on November 17 before returning home to face Jacksonville State on Saturday, November 23 in conjunction with the men's game versus Boise State. Tip-off for the women will follow the men's game and is set for 1:15 p.m.
To close out November, the Privateers will pay a visit to the Louisiana Lady Techsters on November 29. The Techsters are one of eight in-state schools that the Privateers will face in 2013-14.
"Our opening month to the season is challenging, but it will only prepare us for tough conference play," said Carter. "Playing higher caliber opponents helps us become better as a team. Our schedule features seven teams that went to the postseason with five of those being Southland schools, which is why we are preparing for that stretch with a challenging non-conference schedule."
December has the Privateers as road warriors, playing five of its six contests away from the Lakefront Arena. New Orleans will travel to Jackson State (Dec. 5), Murray State (Dec. 7), North Carolina (Dec. 16), Southern Miss (Dec. 21), and Utah Valley State (Dec. 28).
The only home contest in December comes against Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, December 14, and it is a doubleheader with the men hosting Champion Baptist. Tip for the women is set for 4 p.m.
After a grueling December, the Privateers open Southland Conference play in January with two on the road at Nicholls on January 2 and at McNeese State on January 4, before beginning a four-game home stand. The Privateers will host Abilene Christian on Thursday, January 9 at 5:30 p.m., followed by Incarnate Word on Saturday, January 11 at 4 p.m.
The next week, the Privateers welcome Lamar on Thursday, January 16 at 5:30 p.m. and Sam Houston State on Saturday, January 18 at 4 p.m.
"This will be a good stretch for us to have four games back to back, and a good chance for our young ladies to have a chance to be at home in our building," said Davenport. "Our fans will get a chance to see the cream of the crop of our league during that stretch."
After the four-game stint at the Lakefront Arena, the Privateers will hit the road for five consecutive contests. New Orleans will travel to Houston Baptist (Jan. 23), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Jan. 25), Southeastern La. (Jan. 30), Oral Roberts (Feb. 6), and Central Arkansas (Feb.8).
The Privateers return to the Lakefront Arena with five-game home stand that starts with three in-state foes: Nicholls on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m., McNeese State on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 12 p.m., and Southeastern La. on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m.
The final two home games of the season come against Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State on Thursday, February 27 at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 1 at 4:00 p.m., respectively.
New Orleans closes out the 2013-14 season with two on the road, beginning at Lamar on March 6 and ending at Sam Houston State on March 8.
