NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans athletic department was featured in a Yahoo! Sports story entitled, “Seven years after Hurricane Katrina, Univeristy of New Orleans hoops still trying to find firm footing.”

Published on Wednesday, the story was written by Yahoo! Sports writer Jeff Eisenberg and tells the story of the University's intentions to remain NCAA Division I. The school initiated a move out of the Division I classification in 2009 on a course for NCAA Division III and later NCAA Division II before a March announcement by UNO President Dr. Peter Fos that the institution would remain NCAA Division I

Eisenberg visited the UNO campus on Monday, Apr. 2 while in town for the Men's Final Four.

During his visit, the writer was taken on a tour of the Privateer athletic facilities and met with head men's basketball coach Mark Slessinger and head baseball coach Bruce Peddie. Eisenberg also met with Associate Athletic Director and interim cross country head coach Ola Adegboye.

Prior to and following his visit, Eisenberg also interviewed athletic director Amy Champion and Dr. Fos, in addition to former athletic director Ron Maestri.

The UNO athletic department under the guidance of consultant Richard Giannini is currently working to meet the NCAA membership requirements. The school has not satisfied these mandates since prior to the impact of Hurricane Katrina.

UNO will compete as an NCAA Division I Independent in 2012-13 with hopes of obtaining conference membership in 2013-14.
