President Fos Announces That UNO Athletics Will Remain Division I (Mar. 8, 2012)
NEW ORLEANS - University of New Orleans President Peter Fos announced that UNO will launch a nationwide search for an athletic director. This comes one week after he declared that UNO would remain in Division I athletics, instead of moving to Division II.
“We have changed the course of our athletic program, which is why I think it's important that we cast a wide net for our next athletic director,” President Fos said. “I am evaluating the athletic department as I am every other facet of the University. I want to make sure we have the right people in leadership positions. The athletic director will have a challenging job, but one that offers great opportunity.”
Current athletic director Amy Champion will remain employed in the same capacity until President Fos makes his selection.
President Fos also announced that he is forming a search committee to aid in his selection of an athletic director. The committee will include UNO administrator Joe King; James Lowry, assistant professor and chair of the geography department; Mike Sapera, president of the Privateer Athletic Foundation; David Sherman, chairman of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and others.
UNO is currently competing as a NCAA Division I independent. Operating under a sport-sponsorship waiver received from the NCAA in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, UNO competes in 10 sports.
