NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans men's basketball program partnered with the Rotary Club of Gretna to host a Special Olympics Basketball Clinic on Friday afternoon Lakefront Arena.
“We are so excited to be hosting Special Olympics of Louisiana for another basketball clinic here at beautiful Lakefront Arena,” said UNO head men's basketball coach
Mark Slessinger prior to the event. “Our team and staff could not be happier to welcome these awesome athletes to the arena for basketball fundamentals, skills, and agility.”
“We are also very happy to be partnered with the Rotary Club of Gretna who is joining us in partnership to help make this an even greater event and experience for the athletes.”
Special Olympics of Louisiana has been an active partner with the UNO men's basketball program since Slessinger became the head coach in the summer of 2011. Since April, the Privateers have put on four different events in-conjunction with the Special Olympics.
In addition to clinics and other community events, Slessinger initiated a program this season called “Sless's Stars” in which Special Olympic athletes are honored at center court just minutes before UNO men's basketball contests. These athletes then join the Privateers for introductions and the national anthem.
