NEW ORLEANS – University of New Orleans head men's basketball coach
Mark Slessinger and the Privateer basketball team will host a free basketball clinic on Monday, Jan. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lakefront Arena.
The clinic is open to boys and girls from grades 3-8 with attendees having the opportunity to learn basketball fundamentals from the Privateer basketball team and staff.
Slessinger's team targeted the day as most schools in the greater New Orleans area are off for Martin Luther King Day.
“This is a great way for us to give back and to commemorate Dr. King by giving back to our neighborhood and community,” said Slessinger. “Our team and staff could not be more excited to work with the youth of our area and humbly give back some of what we have been blessed with.”
“This is a great opportunity for kids to come and visit our campus and facility which is one of the finest in the south.”
The camp will take place on the practice courts located in the Auxiliary Gym at Lakefront Arena.
Those attending will need to enter and park on the north shell lot, which is located between the Lakefront Arena and Lake Pontchartrain on the north side of the facility.
“As a resident of the Gentilly neighborhood, it is really important for me to give back to my community,” said UNO forward
Lovell Cook. “I am honored to be a part of our clinic, especially on a day as important as Dr. Martin Luther King Day.”
Privateer guards
Brandon Knight and
Russell Moore are also looking forward to the event.
“I grew up in New Orleans East and the area around UNO,” said Moore. “It really is great to be able to have a free camp for kids to come and pick up some basketball and life fundamentals that can help them reach their dreams.”
“Our team is really proud to give back to our community on MLK Day with this clinic,” said Knight. “We hope that we have a great turnout!”
