CHICAGO - Former University of New Orleans baseball player and head baseball coach Randy Bush was promoted to the position of interim general manager on Friday by the Chicago Cubs.
Bush replaces Jim Hendry who had held the position since July 2002.
A member of the Chicago Cubs organization since January 2005, Bush was originally promoted to the role of assistant general manager in December 2006 following two years as the special assistant to the general manager.
The tenure with the Cubs began upon Bush's departure as UNO head baseball coach.
Bush served as the head coach of his alma mater from 2000 through 2005, posting a 144-145 record and leading the squad to the 2000 NCAA tournament.
Prior to making the NCAA tournament in 2000, the Bush-led Privateers snapped No. 20 Louisiana-Lafayette's 38-game home win streak with a three-game sweep in Lafayette. The sweep enabled the squad to finish a half-game ahead of ULL to claim the Sun Belt Conference regular season title in one of the most memorable moments for the program.
The appearance in the NCAA tournament with UNO during his head coaching tenure was not the first for Bush.
As a student-athlete, the outfielder played one year under legendary head coach Ron Maestri and helped the Privateers to a 1979 NCAA berth alongside current Cubs manager Mike Quade and LSU's head baseball coach Paul Maineri.
Following his UNO career, Bush was selected in the second round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Minnesota Twins – one of eight Privateers to hear their name called that year alongside Quade and Maineri.
Bush made his MLB debut in 1982 and played a part on the 1987 and 1991 Twins' World Series teams.
A member of the UNO Athletic Department Hall of Fame, Bush has two sons - Jason and Ryan.
