NEW ORLEANS – The Southeastern Louisiana offense was silenced for the first six innings, before coming to life in the final three innings to defeat the University of New Orleans 9-1 at Maestri Field on Tuesday.
The victory allowed SLU (31-16) to claim a season sweep of the four-game series against UNO (3-43).
SLU posted five runs in the seventh, taking advantage of three separate UNO errors in the inning.
An error by the catcher on a stolen base attempt by pinch runner Alex Marse set the table for a Jacob Fisher RBI single. The RBI was the first of two in the game for Fisher, who finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
The run broke up a stellar performance by Privateer starter Garrett Manning (0-6). The right-handed pitcher lasted 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs – one earned – on three hits, while striking out a career-high seven.
A drop fly ball to left allowed two more SLU runs with an error by the shortstop extending the inning, which would see one more run scored. The Lions offense continued their exploits with three runs in the eighth and another in the ninth.
Jason Greenleaf (3-2) was the pitcher of record for the Lions after relieving Jordan Hymel in the sixth. Greenleaf did not yield a hit to UNO in 1 1/3 innings after Hymel allowed just three in 5 2/3 innings.
Chris Geronimo was the top hitter for the Privateers, hitting 2-for-3 for the night with Nolan Church scoring the lone run in the bottom of the ninth.
UNO will travel to Lake Charles, La. for a Wednesday night game against McNeese State. Jared Dillon will start for the Cowboys in the contest scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
