NEW ORLEANS – LSU pitcher Tyler Jones pitched a gem on the mound to lift the visiting Tigers to a 5-0 win over the University of New Orleans on Tuesday night at Maestri Field.
Jones (4-0) won in his first start since Mar. 22 by throwing a complete game shutout and striking out 15 UNO (3-48) batters. Jones' effort was the 11th shutout thrown by an opponent against the Privateers this year and the second by LSU (34-19).
Mason Katz went 2-for-5 at the plate and factored into the first two runs scored by the Tigers in the contest. Katz's first tally came across the plate in the sixth inning on a hard single to third base by Tyler Hanover.
The Tigers added another run in the seventh when Katz hit a two-out single to bring in Jacoby Jones. Jones and Mikie Mahtook joined Katz with two hits in the contest.
The sixth inning score ended five scoreless innings by Privateer pitcher Tyler Sanders (1-11), who limited LSU to two hits over the first five frames. Sanders finished the game with seven innings on the mound, allowing two runs – one earned – on six hits while striking out five.
The Tigers scored three more runs in the top of the ninth, taking advantage of three UNO errors in the inning.
Beau Boudreaux, Nolan Church and Cameron Wheeless accounted for the three hits by the Privateer offense.
UNO will close the 2011 schedule with three games against North Florida, beginning Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The series concludes with contests on Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
