MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State won their second straight game of the weekend, defeating the University of New Orleans 12-2 on Saturday night.
One night after scoring eight runs in the first three innings, KSU (30-20) posted eight runs in the first two innings to jump out ahead of UNO (3-47). The loss was the 17th in a row for the Privateers.
The Wildcats opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning, capitalizing on an opportunity after their first two batters reached base in the frame. A two-run triple by Jake Brown was one of six hits in the second inning as KSU posted six more runs in their second trip to the plate to build an 8-0 lead.
UNO starter Nolan Church (0-4) departed before the second inning concluded, allowing eight runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 inning. Robert Ormsbee replaced Church and threw 6 1/3 innings, yielding four runs on seven hits while matching his career-high with six strikeouts.
The Privateers had their chances offensively with 10 hits in the game.
UNO would not cash in on those chances until the sixth inning. Three straight base hits set the table for the Privateers, who got runs from Zach Pohto and Jake Palmisano in the frame.
Pohto scored on a Michael Tedesco double with Palmisano turning the corner for home on a Stefan Farrell grounder. Pohto and teammate Tyler Sanders finished the game 2-for-4 to lead UNO.
KSU rounded out their scoring with two runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth.
Ross Kivett was 4-for-5 with four runs with four players led by Nick Martini having a pair of hits. Martini's night included two runs and three RBIs.
Matt Applegate (5-3) was the winner for the Wildcats with seven innings on the mound, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out 12. Levi Schlick held the Privateers to a single hit in two innings of relief.
