HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana defeated the University of New Orleans 15-5 in eight innings on Wednesday night at Alumni Field.
The win was the third of the season for SLU (28-15) in as many games against UNO (3-38). The loss was the ninth in a row for the Privateers, equaling last year's nine-game skid as the second-longest in school history.
Jeff Harkensee led the Lions with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with four runs and three RBIs.
The left fielder's night included a lead-off triple in the second inning and a two-run home run in the fourth that provided SLU with its early scoring.
After Harkensee scored his first run, the Privateers evened the score by putting together three straight hits in the third inning, capped by Chris Geronimo scoring on a Jake Palmisano RBI single.
The Harkensee home run was part of a three-run third that put the hosts ahead 4-1. UNO cut the lead to one as Blake LeBlanc knocked in a pair of runs with a one-out single in the fourth that was aided by a SLU fielding error.
As they had done previously, the Lions answered back with three straight Lions reaching base to open the fourth. The offensive spurt led to two runs in the fourth and ended the day for Privateer starter Corey Laudermill (0-2). The freshman allowed six runs on five hits over three innings while failing to retire any of the three SLU batters he faced in the fourth.
The Lions added a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. A Brock Hebert three-run home run was followed later in the eighth inning by a Josh Cryer two-run single that ended the game an inning early.
Before the five-run eighth, errors played a part in help the Privateers score scoring their final two runs over the last four innings.
Beau Boudreaux scored in the sixth on a dropped fly ball with two outs in the inning with Michael Ballero coming home in the eighth on a Zach Pohto double after reaching basing on a miscue earlier in the frame.
Matt Pittari (1-0) was the pitcher of record for the Lions with 4 1/3 inning of relief while holding the Privateers to two runs on two hits, striking out five.
Boudreaux was the top hitter for UNO after going 2-for-5 while LeBlanc added two RBIs as part of a 1-for-4 night.
UNO will play four games this weekend in Lynchburg, Va. beginning with LeMoyne on Friday afternoon at 12 p.m. The Privateers will play two games against LeMoyne and against host Liberty over three days.
