PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida broke a tie at 58 with a late run in the game's final minutes to defeat the University of New Orleans 75-63 in a women's basketball contest at UWF Field House on Wednesday night.
UNO (0-10) trailed the entire contest until a
Mirjam Sipos lay-up knotted the score at 58 with 6:21 remaining in the game. The basket was part of a Lady Privateer-high of 22 points for the guard, who also shot 9 of 13 from the field against UWF (3-6).
With the game knotted up, the Argos hit their stride with 10 straight points.
The Sipos' lay-up served as UNO's last field goal until the native of Sopron, Hungary added a three-pointer with 37 seconds before the final buzzer. The only other points for the Lady Privateers in the final 6:21 came on a pair of Sipos free throws with 1:59 to go.
The strong offensive effort down the stretch by UWF completed a game in which the hosts shot 57.7 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from beyond the arc.
Octavia Bearden scored 21 points for the Argos to lead fours player into double figures. Sher'Ryan Scott added 15 points while Hanna Vette and Erica Wright scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Scott scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half in which UWF controlled the tempo at the onset of the game by scoring the first nine points before two minutes had expired. A
Keri Thomas basket at the 17:29 mark provided UNO with its first points of the contest.
The Argos' momentum continued for much of the first half as they increased their advantage to 12 points at 31-19. With UWF making 17 of 28 attempts from the field, it looked as if the hosts may run away with it.
A 10-0 run by UNO kept the game within reach with a
Megan Buckley lay-up with 3:41 remaining before the break pulling the Lady Privateers with two points at 31-29.
The UNO defense played a large part in the spurt as UWF was held without a field goal for over three minutes of play while also turning the ball several times on way to 11 miscues in the opening 20 minutes.
Several opportunities to the tie game at 33 were missed for the Lady Privateers with the Argos scoring seven of the final nine points before the half to carry a 40-33 advantage into the break.
The second half featured UNO trying to close the gap that had been created.
The Lady Privateers trailed by as many as 12 points at 45-33 before reaching within one point at 50-49 on a
Yosha Watson lay-up with 11:39 to go. It was 1 of 2 one-point advantages for UWF prior to the tie at 58.
Watson added 10 points for the Lady Privateers, who forced 24 Argo turnovers for the contest creating a 30-13 advantage in the points off turnovers for the guest squad.
UNO will end its eight-game road trip with a 12 p.m. home date against North Alabama this Sunday at Lakefront Arena. The game is the frontend of a doubleheader with the Privateer men, who will tip at 2:30 p.m.
