NEW ORLEANS – An all-expense paid trip to Hawaii and a pair of $300 bookstore stipends are the featured prizes as the University of New Orleans athletic department hosts 'Mid-Day Madness' on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 12 p.m. at the Human Performance Center.
The event is just one half of a busy day of UNO athletics that will feature a Privateer volleyball match at 7 p.m. that night.
Free for all participants, the 'Mid-Day Madness' event will feature more than just team drills and free food.
One male and one female student will have an opportunity to shoot a half-court shot with a made basket enabling the student to travel to Hawaii in February with the men's basketball team.
Sponsored by the Privateer Athletic Foundation, students can register at Mid-Day Madness for the opportunity and must 'like' the “University of New Orleans Basketball” page on Facebook to be eligible.
Two lucky students will also get drawn from the crowd to shoot a three-pointer with a $300 bookstore stipend on the line. Other contests will fill the slate, including one competition that will feature UNO's interim Chancellor Dr. Joe King
Entertainment at the event will feature New Orleans' Hornets mascot Hugo, who will be accompanied by the Honeybees dance team. The UNO Cheerleaders, Lafitte the Mascot and Lafitte's Treasures Dance team will also be on hand.
Giveaways include gift certificates to local restaurants and t-shirts featuring the Privateer basketball schedules. Mardi Gras beads provided by T.J.'s Carnival Supply in Gretna will also be thrown into the crowd.
The school's two basketball teams – the women led by interim head coach Keeshawn Carter and the men by first-year head coach
Mark Slessinger – will take to the floor at 12:30 p.m. as a formal introduction to the student body and the community.
The fun does not stop at 2 p.m. as both UNO basketball teams will appear at the 'Think Pink' volleyball match between the Privateers and Xavier that night at 7 p.m. at the HPC.
The UNO volleyball squad will wear pink against the cross-town Gold Nuggets and all fans are encouraged to follow suit.
Intermission activities will feature the Lady Privateers and UNO fraternity members challenging the Privateer men's basketball team alongside UNO sorority members in an exhibition volleyball contest.
Throughout the day, information on breast cancer will be available from the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The UNO athletic department will also be selling pink Crocs in which proceeds will be directed to the Komen Foundation.
