Updates from Q-School: Cornelson Begins Quest

Toledo, Crain Participating in Same Event in Texas; Murayama, Cornelson Also Competing

Cornelson Scores Continues to Drop During Thursday's Third Round (Oct. 27, 2011)

LANTANA, Texas - Former University of New Orleans golfer Adam Cornelson's score continued to drop on Thursday at a PGA Tour Q-School first stage event in Texas, but he remains off the pace needed to qualify for the second stage of the three-tier PGA Q-School.

Cornelson fired a 1-over 73 and entered Friday's final stage at 9-over for the tournament. The Canadian is eight strokes off the number needed to advance to the second stage.

Former TCU standout James Sacheck still leads the field at 12-under 204 after his third consecutive score under-par. Sacheck shot a 4-under 68 on Thursday.

Another former UNO golfer Jose Toledo has already qualified for the second stage of the event, while other Privateer alum Kenji Murayama and Casey Crain had their run halted in first stage events last week.
 

Cornelson Shaves Two Strokes Off Opening Score, Nine Shots off Pace (Oct. 26, 2011)

LANTANA, Texas - Adam Cornelson shot a 3-over 75 and is now in a tie for 71st through the opening round of a PGA Tour Q-School event in Lantana, Texas.

Cornelson shaved two shots off his score from the opening day of the tournament, but presently finds himself in nine shots off the pace needed to advance to the second stage.

The top 23 players and ties will advance to the next stage and there are currently nine players tied at 1 -under through two rounds. Former Texas Christian standout James Sacheck is the leader at 8-under par.

Cornelson will continue play on Thursday morning, seeking to get back in position to advance.
 

Former Privateer Adam Cornelson Begins PGA Q-School Quest (Oct. 25, 2011)

LANTANA, Texas - Former Privateer Adam Cornelson shot a 5-over 77 on Tuesday and is in a tie for 66th through the opening round of a PGA Tour Q-School event in Lantana, Texas.

Cornelson is five shots off the number through 18 holes as the top 23 and ties advance to the second stage. The number on the opening day is even-par 72.

James Sacheck is the leader after shooting a 5-under 67. Four golfers are two shots back at 3-under 69.

Elsewhere, Kenji Murayama wrapped up his play in Auburn, Ala. with a tie for 54th in a PGA Q-School First stage event. Murayma was 16-over for the tournament after firing a 1-over 73 in Saturday's final round.

Cornelson will begin his second round at approximately 9 a.m. Weds. morning.
 

Toledo Advances to Second Stage of Q-School while Crain Eliminated (Oct. 21, 2011)

KINGWOOD, Texas - Former University of New Orleans golfer Jose Toledo punched his ticket to the second stage of PGA Tour Q-School qualfying for the second straight year on Friday after a 10th place finish at a first stage event at Deerwood Golf Club.

Needing to be placed in the top 22 and ties after four rounds of golf, Toledo shot a 1-under 71 for a four-round score of 1-over 289. The result placed the native of Guatemala in a tie for 10th place, three shots clear of the qualifying line.

The second stage of qualifying for the PGA Tour will take place in mid-Nov. for Toledo, a ewek before he heads to China to compete in the 2011 Omega Mission Hills World Cup to represent his native Guatemala.

Fellow Privateer alum Casey Crain missed out on qualifying by eight strokes, finishing four rounds at 12-over 300. Crain could never recover from an opening round 9-over 81 as he shot 3-over during the next three rounds.

Former Lamar golfer Dawie Van der Walt won the tournament by five strokes with a 13-under 275.

In Auburn, Ala., another former Privateer continued his struggles on the week. Kenji Murayama shot a 7-over 79 and finds himself out of contention with a 15-over 231.

Not all golfer had finished and Murayama was in 58th with the top 19 and ties advancing to the second stage from the event. Murayama will play his fourth round on Saturday.
 

Toledo in Position to Advance Entering Final Round, Plus Updates on Murayama & Crain (Oct. 20, 2011)

KINGWOOD, Texas - Former University of New Orleans golfer Jose Toledo remains in a good position to advance to the second stage of the PGA Q-School process after shooting an even-par 72 on Thursday at Deerwood Golf Club.

Toledo is at 2-over for the tournament and in 15th place through three rounds at the event in which the top 22 positions and ties advance to the next stage. Toledo reached the second stage last year.

At the same event, fellow former Privateer Casey Crain would be eight shots off the number to advance at this point. Crain posted a 1-under 71 on Thursday, but is 11-over for the tournament.

Former Lamar golfer Dawie Van der Walt leads at 11-under 205 through three rounds. If the tournament ended Tuesday, it would take a 3-over score to advance to the next round.

Rounding out the UNO golfers competing this week, Kenji Murayama posted an 8-over 80 on Thursday and resides in a tie for 51st place at the event being held in Auburn, Ala.

Murayama's round follows an even-par 72 on Wednesday and he now is seven shots off what would be the qualifying number. The top 19 positions and ties advance from Auburn while former UAB standout and United States Walker Cup participant Zachary Sucher is the leader in the event at 6-under 138.

All three golfers will compete on Friday with Toledo and Crain concluding their tournament and Murayama playing the third of four rounds. A fourth golfer - Adam Cornelson - will compete in a PGA Q-School first stage event next week in Lantana, Texas.
 

Toledo Makes Charge Up Q-School Leaderboard, Murayama Off to Strong Star (Oct. 19, 2011)

KINGWOOD, Texas - Former University of New Orleans golfer Jose Toledo made a big move up the leader board in the second round of Wednesday's PGA Q-School first stage.

Toledo recovered from a 4-over 75 on Tuesday to fire a 1-under 71 on Wednesday. Toledo posted par scores on his final eight holes to maintain his under par score and move into a tie for 13th.

Fellow Privateer alum Casey Crain also improved his standing, shooting a 3-over 75 on the day to find himself in a tie for 59th at 12-over for the tournament.

Former Lamar golfer Dawie Van der Walt who calls Kingwood, Texas home is leading the event with a 7-under 137. The top 22 players and ties will advance to the second stage, an accolade that both Crain and Toledo accomplished in 2010.

In another PGA Q-School first stage event in Alabama, Kenji Murayama got off to a solid start by shooting an opening round even-par 72.

Murayama is tied for 13th place and is four strokes off the pace set by former Division II standout Christian Ries. The former Columbus State golfer stands alone at 4-under par in a competition in which the top 19 players and ties will advance to the second stage.

Toledo and Crain will continue on with the third round in Texas on Thursday with Murayama competing in the second round of his event in Alabama. A fourth former Privateer - Adam Cornelson - will not play his first stage event until Oct. 25-28 in Lantana, Texas.
 

Toledo, Crain Get Off to Rocky Starts in Q-School First Stage's Opening Round (Oct. 18, 2011)

KINGWOOD, Texas - University of New Orleans alums Jose Toledo and Casey Crain got off to rough starts in the opening round of the first stage of PGA Tour Q-School on Tuesday at Deerwood Golf Club.

Toledo is the best positioned of the duo after shooting a 3-over 75, tying the native of Guatemala for 27th place in the field of 74. Crain posted a 9-over 81 and is a tie for 62nd.

Only eight players got under par on the day with four players leading the way at 2-under 70. That group includes Barry O'Neill, Steve Ziegler, Dawie Van der Walt and Brien Davis.

Toledo and Crain will tee it off in the second round on Wednesday. Elsewhere, Kenji Murayama will begin play at the Auburn University Club. Murayama won his second career professional title last week, winning an event in Mexico.
 

Pair of Former UNO Golfers Begin Run at PGA Tour Card (Oct. 17, 2011)

KINGWOOD, TEXAS - Former University of New Orleans golfers Casey Crain and Jose Toledo will begin their efforts to earn a spot on the PGA Tour as they tee off in the first stage of Q-School at Deerwood Golf Club on Tuesday.

Competing for a spot on the PGA Tour is nothing new for Crain or Toledo.

Last fall, Crain reached the final stage of the three round qualifying process while Toledo advanced to the second round. Crain's finish last season earned him playing privileges on the Nationwide Tour this past season.

This week's four-round tournament in in Texas is one of 13 first-stage events. Approximately 78 players will compete with typically the top 19 to 21 players and ties advancing to the second stage.

Second-stage tournaments are scheduled for Nov. 15-18 and Nov. 16-19 at six different sites.

The final qualifying stage is Nov. 30-Dec. 5 at PGA West in LaQuinta, Calif. Approximately 156 players plus ties from the second stage will compete in the final stage with an opportunity to earn PGA Tour playing privileges on the line.

On Tuesday, Crain will tee off at 8:30 a.m. with former University of Houston standout Pablo Acuna, and North Carolina alum Ross Bain. The Guatemalan teammate of Toledo, Acuna will team with the former Privateer at the Omega World Cup in China in November.

Toledo is scheduled to tee off at 8:40 a.m. with former Nebraska golfer Brady Schnell and current Canadian PGA Tour member Derek Oakey, who played collegiately at Georgia State.

Crain played at UNO from 1997 through 2001, earning a spot on the Sun Belt Conference's All-Time Golf team named in 2006 after 30 years of the league.

In addition to his PGA Tour final stage appearance last year, Crain reached the second round of PGA Tour qualifying in 2009. The Louisiana native has participated in 18 Nationwide events with a best finish of a tie for 15th in the BMW Charity Pro-Am.

Toledo was twice named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Player of the Year while qualifying in 2007 to compete in the NCAA East Regional as an individual. This past year, the Guatemalan won a local U.S. Open qualifier in  addition to posting a tournament victory in the Abierto de Haciena Nueva where he fired a 6-under 282 through four rounds to win the 22-player event.
