NEW ORLEANS - Several days after putting together their most complete effort
this season, the University of New Orleans women's basketball team will
look for the effort to carry over to a 4:30 p.m. contest on Saturday
afternoon at Lakefront Arena against Arkansas State.
The game is the first half of a doubleheader with the men, who will tip off at 7 p.m. against ASU. Both contests can be heard locally on WGSO 990 AM or online at WGSO.com. Fans can also watch the game on UNO Vision. Log on to UNOPrivateers.com for subscription information.
Rachele Monroe became the 11th player on the 12 member active roster to hit double-figures this season for UNO (8-15, 2-10 Sun Belt) when she scored a career-high 10 points against South Alabama on Wednesday.
Monroe was joined by four other players in double-digits, the first time the Lady Privateers have received at least 10 points from five different sources this season.
The scoring effort was just one of several things that fell into place for UNO on the night.
The Lady Privateers matched their season-high with 18 assists, held to a 16 rebound margin in the battle of the boards, while also connecting on 7 of 14 attempts from beyond the arc. The seven made three-pointers were the second most this year.
Though there are many different ways for a team to win, head coach
Amy Champion's squad will be preparing for an ASU (9-13, 4-7 SBC) squad that is hoping to avoid their first losing season in seven years.
Brian Boyer, who has over 150 victories at the helm of the ASU program, has watched as his team has struggled on the road in conference, dropping 5 of 6 contests away from the Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark.
The Red Wolves do have several players to carry the weight in their lineup, headed by Ebonie Jefferson, who averages 15.2 points and 5.9 rebounds a game. Sherina Scott and Shania Hurst average 11.9 and 11.6 points per game, respectively with Scott also doubling as the team's leading rebounder with 7.2 board a contest.
In the squad's most recent contest, UALR claimed a 79-48 win over ASU and in doing so, completed their first in-season sweep of their in-state rivals.
UNO will wrap up their three-game homestand on Weds, Feb. 10 against North Texas. The Mean Green have won two in a row against the Lady Privateers, including a 94-84 decision on Jan. 9 in Denton, Texas.
