FINAL RESULTS
SPRINGFIELD, La. - It was an up and down day for the University of New Orleans golf team during Monday action of the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate. But the Privateers are still in position for another tournament win.
UNO opened play with a tournament-record 8-under par 280 in the morning round before struggling to a 12-over par 300 in the afternoon. The effort leaves the Privateers tied for second overall -- one shot behind tournament-leader Rice.
Junior Ken Looper and sophomore Sebastian Szirmak are 1-under par after two rounds and tied for sixth individually. Looper shot 72-71, while Szirmak opened with a 5-under 67 before closing with a 76.
The 67 was a career-low round for Szirmak, who was 5-under par during his final four holes.
Hector Arias (T-11th individually) shot 70-74, while freshman Pablo Serna (T-53rd) shot 75-79. Junior Oscar Zetterwall recorded a 1-under 71 in the morning before being disqualified in the second round due to an improperly signed scorecard.
Sophomore Derek East, competing as an individual, shot 81-78.
"We got off to a great start and really closed the round well," said UNO head coach Chris McCarter, whose team is aiming for its second consecutive tournament championship. "We stubbed our toe a bit in the afternoon, but we are still in good position.
"I really like the toughness of this group, so we'll see how we perform (Tuesday)."
Rice shot 290-289 to take a one-shot lead over UNO and Louisiana-Lafayette. Five schools are within eight shots of the lead. ULL's Andrew Noto has the individual lead following rounds of 71-69.
Final-round action will take place on Tuesday morning. A full recap and scores will be posted on UNOPrivateers.com.
