CARBONDALE, Ill. - The University of New Orleans men's and women's
swimming and diving teams were swept on the road by Southern Illinois
on Friday night
The SIU men won 166-133 over the Privateer men (1-2) while the Saluki
women took a 164-121 victory over their UNO counterparts (1-2).
All four first-place winners for the men had school-record performances against SIU.
Petar Petrovic lowered his school-record in the 100 back (51.37) and
Birkir Mar Jonsson won the 100 fly (50.73). The previous mark in the
100 fly was held by Jarryd Gregoire at 51.62.
Ben Solari trimmed his school mark by nine tenths of a second in his
200 IM victory (1:56.57) while the 400 free relay team of Ash Dougan,
Jake Van Roekel, Jonsson and Gregoire took nearly eight tenths of a
second off the school-best time in the event.
On the women's side, Cristina Lay won the 200 fly (2:09.59) and 200 IM
(2:10.42) for her seventh and eighth wins in nine events on the year.
Catalina Mendieta, making her UNO debut, took the 100 fly (1:00.73).
The 400 free relay closed out the first-place finishes for the women,
swimming the second-fastest team in school history, hitting the wall in
3:35.98. The team comprised of Eva Hannesdottir, Tess Sweatman, Sarah
Gros and Mendieta.
Outside of the first-place finishers, other records fell on the men's side during the dual.
Petrovic, Mark Schindler, Jonsson nd Gregoire began the
dual for the men with a school-record performance, while finishing
second in the 400 medley relay. Their time of 3:25.22 beat the previous
top mark in the event by over 15 seconds.
Bo Wullings set two school records in distance free events with
second-place finishes in the 500 free (4:41.20) and 1000 free
(9:40.96).
The records continued to fall as Jake Van Roekel swam a 1:44.65 200
free, topping the old mark by Patrick Daigle set in 1990 of 1:45.03.
Jonsson was involved in his third record of the day with his fourth
place finish in the 200 fly (1:55.84) while Gregoire finished second in
the 100 free (47.25) with a mark of his own.
Petrovic and Solari each finished second in their events to add
additional school marks, with Petrovic going 1:54.35 in the 200 back
and Solari swimming 2:06.55 in the 200 breast.
In diving, a pair of Sun Belt Conference Divers of the Week from a week
ago set personal-bests from 3-meters. Johnny DeMaine scored a
school-record 269.48 while Kelly Swartzbaugh scored 231.67, to place
second in their respective events.
Both the UNO men and women will continue their road trip with a 12 p.m
dual in Bowling Green, Ky. against the University of the Cumberlands and Western Kentucky on
Saturday.
