NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans volleyball program will team
up with Zeta Tau Alpha to "Dig for the Cure" at 7 p.m on Oct 17 when
the Privateers host UALR in a Sun Belt Conference contest at the Human Performance Center.
Members of the volleyball team and ZTA are in the process of
acquiring pledges for each dig the Privateers rack up against the Trojans. All
donations will go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Dig for the Cure was started in 2003 by Charlotte head volleyball coach Lisa Marston
whose mother is a breast cancer survivor. Marston's goal was to combine her
volleyball program's community service project with a group that helped her
mother and others like her to survive.
The program has continued to expand with more schools
representing all divisions of collegiate play and high schools stepping up to
the challenge of raising money. This year, over 120 universities have committed
to participate and build on the $108,000 raised by participant schools in the
first four years of the program.
During the match, Privateer coaches, players and staff will
wear pink with representatives from Good Samaritan Hospitals present at the HPC with educational
material related to breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to join in by wearing
pink to the match
Individuals can make a donation or a pledge by contacting
Kearney Gay in the UNO athletic department by phone at 504-280-3978 or by
e-mail at wgay@uno.edu.
A table will be set up at home volleyball matches against
South Alabama (Oct. 9), Troy (Oct. 12) and Arkansas State (Oct. 16)
for those looking to make a donation or pledge. There will also be a table set
up the day of the match against UALR.
